Chapter 4-6
These chapters capture pivotal moments in the novel. Do you believe humans should tamper with death? Should they try to bring back the dead or try to extend life through scientific experimentation such as stem cell research, etc. Explain. Use text evidence and outside resources such as scientific articles, historical facts, the Bible, mythology, etc.
Chapter 1-3
Briefly summarize the main events in these chapters. Make sure you give textual evidence in your response. Choose one of the following questions:
1.) Mary Shelley spends a lot of time describing Victor's childhood and his relationship with his parents. Do you believe Victor's parents were good parents? Give examples.
2.) Under what circumstances does Elizabeth come into Victor's family? What does Caroline say to Victor about Elizabeth? Notice the focus on physical appearances. Do you believe a person's physical appearance is important even in today's day and age?
3.) In these early chapters we start to see Victor's personality. How is his personality contrasted with Elizabeth and Henry? Can good friends have opposite personalities? Explain.
4.) In Chapter 2, Victor picks up a book written by Cornelius Agrippa, but his father calls it "sad trash". Out of curiosity and rebellion, Victor continues to read this book. Do you believe parents can have a positive or negative influence in what a child studies? Give examples from the text and your own observations.
5.) In Chapter 3, Victor's family is struck with tragedy. Explain what happens to Caroline. Knowing Mary Shelley's tragic life, what similarities can you find.
Mary Shelley's Bio and Letters 1-4
Watch the short video about Mary Shelley's life and then read Letters 1-4. Choose one of the following questions:
1.) Mary Shelley lived during a time of great scientific exploration. How does Walton embody the spirit of adventure and discovery? Research of the historical aspects of the 1800s and connect it to the Letters.
2.) Mary's encountered many tragedies in her life. How might these events helped shape this famous novel? Find examples in the Letters of the gothic style of writing (look up gothic literature)?
3.) Walton laments not having a friend that matches his passion and intellect. Do you believe humans need companionship? Can isolation be beneficial? Who comes aboard his ship and how does Walton feel about this?
4.) What is Walton seeking to do on his voyage? Do you believe humans should spend time and energy exploring new areas even if it can be dangerous for example the depths of the ocean or outer space?
